Last Month I did some moderation for an event at the International Rotterdam Film Festival here in Holland. There is a write-up in independent magazine about it. Have a look!

The Independent’s Randi Cecchine, a filmmaker and educator from New York City, is impressed to learn that governments in Europe are eager to come up with policies to promote media literacy among their citizens, particularly young people. But as a European friend suggests, the role of the government in establishing guidelines concerning media literacy and education can be complicated—especially if media makers are cut out of the policy-making loop.

Gabriel McIntyre (I’ll call him Gabemac) was the charming conference moderator. I found it interesting that they chose an American to lead the discussion. Gabriel is originally from Atlanta, but has lived in the Netherlands for many years, working as an educator and with emerging technology and advertising.

He helped me understand the European media literacy context a little more clearly, reminding me that most media is funded by the government, and that historically media has often been used for propaganda for pretty bad purposes. The notion is that if the government has such a large role in creating the media, it also has a responsibility to enhance the cultural undersanding of media.

I ask Gabe what he thinks comes out of events like this.

Teaching Design for Virtual Theater and Games I often find myself explaining to people what that actually means. I tend to use examples of what it is rather than the philosophy (which is a real long keynote if you ever have the time). However this video really reminds me of the kinds of stuff that my students would do. Have a look and enjoy how much fun it is to give people the feeling they are in a twilight zone for just a little while.

I just heard that my good friend Steve (who has been there for me through a lot of shit) has popped the question and is getting married! He is in Australia at the moment and decided to ask Ghislaine there. I have to admit I was rather surprised becuase I never thought Steve would want to get married, but I guess when the right woman comes around, you just go in full throttle sometimes as a romantic. I wish the both of them lots of happiness and now I get to save for a possible trip to Australia for the wedding! SWEEEET!!!

The best feeling in the world when you feel betrayed is to come home and feel the love. And with my family, EVERYONE shows up, aunts, uncles, cousins, family friends all come together, eat, drink and give me love and support. There is no greater gift in the world than that. I am the luckiest man!

Last Friday we played some Poker at GabeB’s. Mindcaster, bicycleMark and Richard Bluestein showed up as well. Richard grabbed the tape recorder and just put it on the table to a show. This year at picnic they have some really fun ideas with the confrence badges. On the badge you see photos of other attendees that match your own profile. They also place all the tags you have on your profile on your badge as well. How funny was it when I saw Jens’s badge from BMW and on his badge he had Gabe B.’s photo of people he needs to meet. (picture below). Just now Bruno Giussani walked up to Mindcaster and asked how his Wifi was working. I pointed out to Mindcaster that Bruno was one of the people on his badge. Hilarious. It’s a small world conference.

For those who are interested, I will be speaking on the panel “Transforming Media” being hosted by Divx at the Picnic Festival in Amsterdam. The panel is in the Engine room on Wed. 26 and is from 10:00 to 13:00. If you are there, give me a shout out!

Furthermore there are lots of interesting things to be seen at picnic, for free. If you have the time next week, check out the program. The conference track is 900+ euro (I know it’s pricey) but you don’t need that for all events.

Design for Virtual Theater and Games Diplomas

1st years

Thursday was one of those great evenings. For those that don’t know I teach at the College of Arts of Utrecht. I teach at the Design for Virtual Theater and Games faculty. Last Thursday we gave out graduation diplomas.

This year we gave out the most 1st year diplomas that we can remember. We’re not getting easier in giving them out, it just shows that the curriculum after so many years is really starting to work. If it was crap work, we wouldn’t pass them. But it’s not. The level is getting higher every year and the students are following with the expectations.

It gives you a special feeling to see so many students standing in the line. But then it gets even better. We give out the graduation diplomas. This is always a very proud moment for myself. Up until a few years ago I only taught 1st and second year students at the HKU. Now I am a mentor for 4th year students. Seeing THEM receive diplomas is the best feeling you can get. The other night I was watching a boxing coach saying how he was more nervous seeing his pupils go into the ring than when he was boxing for his country in the Olympics. There is a lot of truth to that. Let me tell you why I am so proud about them.

Rene

First there is Rene. Rene’s mind runs at 200 mph. Incredible ideas and his mouth moves just as fast. Sometimes it’s hard for me to keep up with him and his thoughts. He really improved this last year and shined. Even though he is not very technical, he made an incredible installation. Imagine walking into a room and you see a video wall. As you walk closer to the wall, you start to see your silhouette. However, you don’t see yourself in your silhouette, but someone else in another location somewhere else in the world. If you get to close to see the person, the connection is broken forever and you see someone else at another location. It was really cool to try and hold onto this moment with some other person in some other location across the world. For that brief moment you saw someone else in your body, and they saw you in theirs somewhere. Now to me that is digital Art at it’s best.

Fabian

Then there is Fabian. Fabian and I both had losses in our family around the same time. However Fabian’s losses and troubles with family members were more than I had. It was a really rough time for him, however he finished the group project he was doing with flying colors, and then he took time to take off a while from his study to help out his family. Then to see him come back, and create a project wherein, for the first time I have ever seen, is able to create a tension through pre-recorded and live footage combined with an actor on the stage, and his choice of sound scape and music to enhance the tension, WOW. All I can say is that he will become the David Lynch of theater. Extremely cool.

Claudia

Then there is Claudia. Claudia does not say much at all. She is one of those students you are always scared of as a teacher. Sitting in the class not saying much, but you know that they ARE working their butts off. In a group project you can rarely tell what they do, but you know if they were not there, no one would be performing. So the quiet Claudia decided to take a very personal subject, adoption, and create a theatrical piece around it, all on her own. Not only did she write the script, film interviews, edit footage, produce a play, ok she didn’t act herself, but did practically everything herself, was eventually her downfall. The first round she didn’t pass with her piece. But that didn’t stop her. She went back to the drawing board, and over the summer came back with a great piece. In somewhere in the last year she has started to find her voice. A voice that I hope to hear and see a lot more of in the future. Espically with how she works with another student Pim. The relationship Pim and Claudia reminds me a lot of Gabe B and myself.

wesley

Then there is Wesley. Wesley was always difficult to track down as a teacher, as in he was always off doing his own thing. However Wesley has developed his own genre of Art. Messages in food. I’m not talking about Chinese fortune cookies here. No, no, no. Wesley has made a couple of projects. One with chocolate and bon bons the other with hamburgers. Both projects have a installation where a couple sit in front of. They are handed a mic, and speak in a message. Depending on the waves in the voice various blow torches, spices, creams etc. activate to produce a unique taste to the chocolates or burgers, that is unique to the message being said. I have a video which I will post at a later date about how this works. But it is wonderful to see this installation come to life in front of you, and then give that food product to a loved one with the message.It REALLY works awesome. Keep an eye on Wesley, as I believe his installations will me making the festival scene.

So that is some of the work being done with my students. Later I’ll start talking about the projects that are going on this year and a look at some past works.

Theater Festival Amsterdam

This is a short video of an acrobatics act that wrapped up the Theater Festival in Amsterdam. over 30 theaters were participating. There were more plays than you can throw a stick at. It’s at the scale of the Edinburgh’s festival, but that’s where the organizers are headed. Amazing that they got no funding from I Amsterdam. This is the kind of festival that needs more attention from the city and from sponsers. For more information check the TF1 website.

Asterix

I came across this really cool app for making notes in videos. You can make a new note, much like one does on flickr on any video you can find on Youtube and other such sites. (At the moment it’s mainly youtube). The cool thing is the note allows you to add a description, url link, and tags. The REALLY cool thing about this technology is that not only does it sense automatically when the shot edit happens, but it also AUTO-TRACKS the subject matter to a very high degree. This means your note follows the video. Oh yes, and you can have more than one note running in the same screen at once.

I grabbed a film we did of Luc Besson at the DLD conference in Germany last year and noted some of the people in the crowd. Have a watch, try it yourself. I really like this technology and app. I expect these guys are gonna go far……

Apparently Thailand has a new punishment for Bad Cops. Ohh the horror! All cops who are caught littering, being late, parking illegally, taking bribes, etc. are foorced to where Hello Kitty armbands. The cuteness factor is so demaeining that the Police Corps think it will work.

Just think if they did this in New York. I see it now. “New York Cop kills 2 homosexuals and is forced to where a spongebob hat for 2 months.”

People are always amazed at how much these reality shows and contests are so popular. It’s not crazy. What we are seeing is true drama, that is not being acted. I don’t care how good an actor you are, there is nothing like seeing real emotion, real drama or experiencing those fleeting moments that reality shows provide. As an example look at this clip to see this dorky mobile phone salesman bring tears (real emotion) to the crowd in this song contest.

I didn’t see this one coming. Apparently apple has added support for Youtube videos on apple TV. which says to me technically they’ve just allowed for Flash video on Apple tv. Which says further to me that adding Metacafe or Veoh films is only a hack away. could this mean that Flash video is going to take over as the dominant file system for video podcasting rather than Mpeg-4? I wonder.

Here is another great site for viewing all kinds of movies, shows etc. It seems to all be published using DIVX and Stage6.com. The name of the site is Joox.net. Could it be a rip from the name Joost? What is interesting about this site is that people are allowed to upload and add links themselves.This way I guess they don’t have to worry about multiple log-ins. That’s one smart way. That is until the Hollywood companies start placing bad copies of the films on first, with drop-outs, bad sync sound, no ending etc. Or thy could just add annoying 30 second ads every 5 min. and place them on these sites. Luckily the boys and girls in Hollywood fight with lawyers rather than brains, so you should be able to enjoy this site for a while.

P.S. The site owners are trying to keep the porn off with difficulty.

I’ve put together a pretty comprehensive list of video sharing sites for all of you to go and spread your videos on virally. A warning though is that most of there are just a simple youtube ripoff, with simple flash streaming, but a few have some really nice features on them. Some of my favorites are veoh, blip.tv, google video, twango vpod and dailymotion. If I’ve missed any (which I’m sure I have) please post them in the comments, and also let me know which are your favorite and why. Thanks and Have FUN!

After reading the comment from Tamara on my last blog post, and the fact that many people look over my sholder and ask me how I do THAT (whether that is some cool new web 2.0 app or revving up my laptops fans, I decided to start a separate blog with a bunch of Non-geek tips and tricks for my digital lifestyle. This blog is for those like Evert, and my brother and Sister who are getting new macs and want to geek it out, or for those who just want to really be on the edge without bleeding like Kelvin and Tamara.

What is that number? The key to unlock DRM on the new Blue Ray HDVDs. It’s been around for a while, since feb., and has been slowly creeping around the net in forums and such. It didn’t go big news until it got involved with a cover-up conspiracy on Digg however. Some lawyer thought it would be better to remove the post from this popular community news site, and all hell broke loose! So what’s so great about this code? I think it’s the base of the encryption that they use in the DRM butyou have to be a real GEEK to know how to use it, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until someone fits it into a keychain remote to kill the DRM in this new Technology. When will the Big Guys get it? DRM is gonna kill them. It’s pointless, useless and just causes a pain for people who actually pay for the content rather than those who are pirating it.

Example for you to think about. I don’t watch many of the shows on TV, as it’s on TV and I never have the time to watch them. But every now and then, I’ve got to keep up with what my students are talking about, so I have to watch a Heroes, or Lost or something. Where do I goto watch this? Sure you can Bittorrent this stuff all day (or weeks) waiting for episodes to download, but I’m impatient. I just got to one of these to sites for my movies and Tv shows if I don’t already have them on my Mail Rental DVD list.

On a final thought, if Big Media wants us to pay money for content, I have a real simple solution for them. MAKE BETTER CONTENT!!!!! How many Summer Blockbuster line-ups this year are gonna be remakes or sequels? Something like 80%. Get creative guys!

Mash-ups from friends

It’s always nice to see when good friends make a mash-up of the past years, and you see all these special moments that you were with them, or special moments of other friends. Even more so all the amazing things that you shared together or virtually. I think the sharing of virtual moments that really happen, and then recorded and vlogged is really special. It’s as if you are always with the ones you cherish, and the circle comes back inside by seeing other friends, girlfriends, loved ones having those special moments even without you there, but you still share the moments through this new medium. Okay, it’s early and I’ve just had my coffee, so maybe I should just say it was cool to open up netvibes this morning, and browse through my xolo tagged videos and see this mash-up again from Marc. Have alook and maybe you will understand. If not? Never mind. You will someday.

Look at how cool this is. We decided to do a test case with our XOLO video up loader for the new Concert at Sea coming in Holland this summer. What is really cool though is that we are also doing the behind the scenes of the concert and Paskal from BLOF and the #1 artist at the moment van Velsen are doing an interview together. Gmail and FON problems

It appears that FON and Gmail are not working well together at my plaze. For some reason both Tam and I are not able to get our Gmail via Pop or IMAP servers. I can only suspect it’s the Fonera router as direct connection works, other POPs work and the problem is happening on ALL our GMAIL account on both our machines. And there is not much on the internet about this problem yet. Well, I sent an e-mail to FON tech support to see what they could come up with. I just hope it gets solved soon for Tamara’s sake.

UPDATE
I figured out that the problem was with the FON and the DNS settings. Apparently what you have to do to solve this problem is change your DNS settings in your network settings on your computer. Seeing as how UPC has no real info on the DNS settings I found that openDNS works really well. Just goto openDNS and follow the instructions and it should work fine. Tam is happy that it’s working again and so am I.

Presedential Candidate Barak Obama made a very cool viral film against Hilary Clinton.
Even though I like both Hilary and Barak, I still don’t feel the american majority will vote for a first female or first black male president. I still think Al Gore should run again. However, this is a very good piece of viral campaign film that I enjoy becuase it shows me that some candidates are REALLY using the interenet and the culture in thier campaign. Have a look. Plus I’m a mac geek.

European Cable Conference in Amsterdam

Most of the time you hear about people meeting eachother from other countries online first, then travelling great distances to meet ypo in real life. Well this is story is the exact opposite. While Tamara and I were travelling in thailand we met Alex from Poland. You know how backpackers meet-up. It was a day I’ll never forget becuase that day I heard I got my first seeding money for XOLO, and the day before Tamara and I swam with Dolphins. But I digress. We met up with Alex in a club on this island in Thailand, and he told about travelling around wanting to do photography professionally. He had more or less just started. I told him all about blogging, flickr, podcasting, vlogging etc. and he was really interested. Now a few months later I get a message from him that he has some of his travel photos online, and I REALLY like them. He’s thinking about doing some travel vlogs, and I wish him all the best with it. What I’m trying to say here is it’s nice to goto another country, meet someone from yet another country and then virtually travel with them after we have physically departed from one another. You never know who the highway or virtual highway has instore for your life.

ABM AMRO in Second Life

I opened up my online bank to transfer over rent and so forth and I see a new message that ABN AMRO has opened an office in second life. Oh man there goes the nieghborhood. So let me think what you could do? Store your Linden? Or how about transfer Linden to Euros, Dollars, Yen and back? I think it’s mainly a show at the moment. That they just thought, “We have to be in Second Life becuase everyone else is.” But in my opinion Second life really blows with all these companies coming in and “re-doing” real life in second life. Make something new, different like the ABM loan sharks club or something. Second life is supposed to be an imaginative exploration. Not a copy of real life. In any case, here is what the mail read:

Brazillians hate youtube

Youtube may see the Brazillians in court becuase of a little scandal with one of thier beloved football stars ex-wives.
Brazilian court orders YouTube shutdown | The Register : “A Brazilian court has ordered the closure of YouTube following the site’s failure to completely remove a video showing Ronaldo’s ex-missus and her new boyf indulging in a bit a of beach rumpy-pumpy, Reuters reports.

Model Daniela Cicarelli sued YouTube after the offending film proved a smash hit among Brazilian YouTubers. She and squeeze Tato Malzoni last year ‘filed to force YouTube to take the video down and demanded $116,000 in damages for each day the video remains up’. Although YouTube did indeed remove some copies, other users reposted it and the whole sorry exposure dragged on for months.”

Now what will ever stop them from re-posting and re-posting and re-posting. I mean honestly. It’s a never ending cycle. Is this just meantt to be doomed? Funny how you never hear about revver, blip or metacafe being sued.

Smoking a joint on a segway is illegal in Holand

Well, the joint isn’t but the segway is apparently. As of New Year’s the dutch Royal traffic agency has banned this awesome mode of transport becuuase:
‘It doesn’t have a brake, you brake by leaning back, and that’s clearly not permissible.’

2007 starts tomorrow

That’s right. It may be January 1st, but I never really count this date as it’s a non-day when done correctly. You are usually so blown away from New Year’s Eve and all the stores are closed, everyone is hung over and tired. Just don’t count it. Last night was great. We first had Patricia, GabeB, In-Ah, iFranz and Renate over for dinner. Then we went over to Wiendelt’s for the 12:00 drink. After that we headed off through a firework gauntlet of amsterdam to get to the Doffer where Hans, Nieltje, Corrine and Marc met up with us. I’d like to write more, but I’m to tired and I can’t remember much anyways. I know I owe Hans a few films or something, and I remember now why I don’t drink champagne. It gives the worse hang-overs. Uhhhh.

Here are some pics of our breakfast together this evening. We didn’t get out of bed and eat until 5:00 p.m. and the moon was already out. Man. See what I mean by a non-day? Bright Lights, Big Cities

It’s been so hectic the last 2 weeks. I haven’t blogged much, because so much has happened. Just before I went for a trip to New York, my best friend Pavle’s father passed away. Tamara talked about it on her blog a bit. It was really devastating for him. That was a lot to deal with, and too much to give it justice in the few sentences that I have your attention. The only thing I can say is that his father was a REAL tough guy. He had cancer of the lower intestine for months, and the pain must have been unbearable. But his family didn’t know, and all he was using was aspirin for the pain. I’m not sure if he didn’t want to worry his family, or he just didn’t want to admit it himself, but he refused any treatments to prolong his life for another half year or so. It seems I’ve always got someone i know dying of cancer around this time. Last year it was my Grandmother. I’d like that to stop please.

On to more pleasant things, I went to New York for a conference. GEMS or (Global Entertainment and Media Summit). Not much of a summit. I think there were maybe 50 people there? But I did meet with a couple of interesting people that I hope we will be doing some great “Green” projects with. New York was in full Christmas swing. EVERYONE was out on the streets shopping. MAn what a lot of people. I hope to have some videos up soon of that. I was a bit worried of Bed Bugs as that’s what everyone said be careful of. I really searched my hotel room for any signs, but found none, so I think I’m safe. I can’t really say too many exciting things as I was only there for 2 nights before I left for Paris and Le Web 3.

It was larger than last year, and it was really freaky being there. Le Web was the first REAL conference that I spoke at about videoblogging. It was wild to go back there after one year, and to know SO many people in the web 2.0 biz. It gave me a realization of how far I’ve come in such a short time. And made me wonder where I and XOLO.TV will be in another year from now. The conference was hijacked by French politics which I’m sure you can read all about that scandal all over the place. For me it was great to meet up with old friends, and new. A real treat was meeting Luca. The crazy Italian blogger who is a big fan of XOLO. I guess in the end this whole web thing has added a new dimension to meeting people. The only thing is, I have to read about the lives of som many friends now, it’s almost hard to keep up.

But it is nice to be back home again. I was soooo tired that I couldn’t do anything at all for a couple of days. I was seeing double even after my second cup of coffee. Time to wind down and enjoy the holidays my body was telling me. So that’s what I’ll have to do. In any case, I’m hoping for a version of XOLO that I can really let loose on before Christmas, that would be a great present. But an even better one will be no laptop, lots of wine, food and friends in the end. So to all the virtual friends out there. Be Merry!!!!

Yes we like to Fry in the south

You’ve heard it before. We love to fry things in the south. Fried chicken, fried snickers bars, fried shrimp (thanks bubba) and for thanks giving Fried Turkey. You may wonder how that works?

Well you first put a sloppy paprika sauce on it like my uncle is demonstrating here. Doesn’t that look good?

And then drop it in a big vat of hot fat. YUMMMY!!! While you are waiting you have a few beers, talk to family, catch up etc. It actually cooks the turkey really fast, and yes it is juicy!!!

But of course we have all kinds of great dishes to go along with it. Tamara loved the Squash Caserol. For those not from the South, squash is a yellow vegetable. May favorite is Sweet Potato Suffle’. Of course my Aunt Bonnie did the family’s famous Pound Cake. It puts a pound on you with each bite, but it tastes soooo gooood. Tamara loved that and is begging me to make it.

I guess I’ll have to wait till she gets better. She’s come down with some flu that everyone else has got. In-Ah has it, Jag has it, even Wiendelt was in the office today coughing all over everybody. I really hope I don’t get it. I did make Tamara some of my famous Chicken Soup to get better. In any case

It was great seeing the family again for ThanksGiving. I think it may be a while before I get back to the states though.

Atlanta Thanks Giving Pre-Post

Today is ThanksGiving here in the states. After coming over to talk to some people about investing in a second round for XOLO.TV I get to spend some time with my family. And I’m really lucky that Tamara got to come along as well. It’s not often that I get over to see my parents, uncles, aunts and cousins for Thanks Giving.

I think the last time I was here for Thanks Giving was at least 6 years ago or so, if not more. I’m really excited to see everyone, and I have all these Christmas gifts already for the Family. Although I haven’t wrapped them yet. Well I couldn’t becuase of the freakn’ security checks that if anything was wrapped, they would be unwrapped, and I’d have to wrap it again. Thus wrapping and travelling is a waste of time.

Well the cars is being loaded up, so I gotta grab the cameras and go have some turkey. YUM!!!!!! Oh and sweet potatoes. Gotta love those!!! A little note for the non-americans, it’s usually turkey for Thanksgiving and Honey Baked Ham for Christmas.

There was a great vibe going on in the Akhnaton Club in Amsterdam last night. Wiendelt and Esther organized the 3rd Jam Party. It’s when a bunch of friends get together, practice for a month and then perform great jam songs for fun. But don’t think it’s not professional. It’s sounded excellent! Gabe B sang a number of songs, Hugo sang a great rendition of “Saturday Night”, Wiendelt and Esther tore down the house many times and I got to sing a song as well. If you missed it, that’s too bad. It may be a while before another Jam Party is organized seeing as how Esther is about to have a second child. Oh man, when does it end all these kids being born around me? In the mean time, there will be some videos online soon I’m sure, but you can always check the Jam Party Photo pool on Flickr. If you were there and have some great pics, please add them to the pool! The pictures added there were taken by Tamara. They look excellent, but she thinks she still needs a better digital camera. I tend to agree actually. Any advice for what she should get? Let us know. It’s almost Christmas.

To everyone who came to the party and helped organize it, thanks for a wonderful night. Now I need to go take another aspirin for my hangover.

Last night Tamara and I threw a Halloween Party. It was to celebrate MY Birthday, Tam’s birthday and a 3 year Anniversary. Click on the picture to go see some more photos. It was excellent seeing all the costumes that everyone came in. And oh man was there a mess this morning. After 5 hours we’ve finished cleaning and are now reliving the night. Notes for next party:

Update:
After getting numerous errors, doing searches on Google, talking in Forums, etc. Blogger is finally posting again to Gabe.NL. HOORAY!!! I’m so happy.

So I had to first turn off comments, rss feeds and archives to get it to work. Then slowly step by step started to add those back. After 1 month it is back and I can start blogging again, and man is there a lot that happened in that time!!!

World Cup 5 Languages and Counting

Through my travels the past month I have watched the World Cup in 5 different languages. It started off with English and Spanish in the United States. ESPN was covering the World Cup pretty well while we were at VloggerCon in Sanf Francisco, and then Atlanta. However the Spanish station Univision something (which has recently doubled it’s viewership since the World Cup) had better covereage. You have of course seen us watching the games in the airplanes on the way to California, but it was great to watch it with my uncle Dean who was my soccer coach as a kid, and who has a tournament named after him in Georgia. You can see him and Tamara in the picture here in full supporter getup.

Then back in Holland I watched the continued matches while I prepared for my trip in Berlin. Watchng the first rounds of many teams, and Holland winning thier second match to secure entry into the next round. Then off to Berlin.

In Berlin of course everything was in German. I still can’t get used to the conference way of watching a game which the Germans love. It basically swithces in between the different games playing at any one time, which means that you never get to watch a Goal happen Live! Bummer. I was so disappointed when Holland lost as I feel it really is home for me now. But life must go on, even though I was in Full Orange getup for the games.

Then I arrived for my backpacking trip through Thailand yesterday. I thought World Cup coverage would be sparse at best. I was wrong. We got updates from the pilot of the game, and once we got our hotel sorted out, I went to a bar 1 block away and watched the highlights of the English loosing to the team that shall not be named (see above holland vs. X), and the French winning over Brazil games. It was all in Thai, so I didn’t understand a word of it. But I saw all the amazing moments of the Matches and understood enough. I’m currently posting this in an internet cafe in Bangkok. The price price per minute is 25 euro cents. Gives you an idea of what the football clothing is that they sell here. I saw some German, and France game shirts (the official ones) for about 100 baht. That’s about 2.5 euro! Sweet!

So there you have it folks. One Cup, 2 Gabes, 3 cameras, 4 countries, 5 languages and counting. WeallSpeakFootball!

Weallspeakfootball Last Day in Berlin

My last day in Berlin and I went on a little travel with my Mini Cooper and Tom Tom to guide me. After going around and seeing the sites like Check Point Charlie, The Prusian Palace, and other amazing sites, I met up with Frans and Alex to enjoy a nice brewski on the side of the water to philosphise about the tao of blogging.

It was a real emotional and thought provoking trip going around old East Germany in the Mini. Here you can see a picture of the Mini with the Amercian flag crossing the wall’s monument line, just a block from Check Point Charlie. It seems there is nothing left of the old East German way as everything has been taken over by Subway, Starbucks, Hilton, etc. Good or bad I’ll let you decide.

It was such a great experience to be in the Coke Flat for 2 weeks and meeting all the awesome people that came by and be a part of the whole football madness. Getting tickets to the games was a real treat, and one I hadn’t expected. I could literally smell the grass from the pitch
I was so close in this picture after one of the games. I know most people are gonna role thier eyes now, but I really want to thank KnallGrau and Coca Cola for the oppurtunity to be a part of weallspeakfootball. It’s something I will not soon forget and enjoyed thouroughly. To those who still get to go, make the most of it I say, and steal a couple bottles of Coke Blak for yourselves.

It looks like we are making headway in the Net Neutrality action. More news from that can be found on savetheinternet.com. What was nice was this letter I recieved today:

This is a world wide issue, that vould cause the next dot com crash. What is the issue? If you haven’t heard about Net Neutrality yet, imagine a world in which telecom providers in the US restrict access to various web services such as google, or flickr, or even iTunes. Slowwing down access to these sites or even rerouting to another site which has paid them more money to service. This is being down also under the umbrella of “security”. Or more like Sensorship. What an aweful world that would be, with no easy access to my family photos, indenpendent record labels, independent press and citizin journalists, or even my friend’s blog. Well it’s happening in theUS right now and will affect all of us worldwide. This needs to be stopped.

Greenpeace is going nuts in Holland!

I just heard from an inside source that Greenpeace has placed a container of radioactive waste in the front hall of VROM. VROM is the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment for the Netherlands. Workers at VROM are scared to leave as they may pass by the radioactive waste. They are basically trapped. Greenpeace is leaving the waste at VROM until 17:00 today but are hoping that Deputy Minister Van Geel officially accept this “gift” from Greeenpeace.

UPDATE:
Aparently the Deputy Minister is going accept the gift in a couple of hours @ 17:30. Another bit of news, those “Ambtenaars” (Dutch word for government workers) are so stupid, there were a number of them just standing around the container talking and drinking coffee after they recorded enough radiation within 6 feet of the container to be dangerous. HELOOOOO!!!!!!

BBC NEWS | UK | Northern Ireland | Star Wars TV ‘saviour for fans’: “With Rick McCallum (Producer of Star Wars for those that didn’t know) saying they are going to be making over 100 hours of a new Star Wars TV show.

So that’s what the BBC is reporting. Oh man at least 100 hours of new episodes. My god!!! LEt’s see we’ve already got the Animated series, 6 films, enough making of’s to throw us into a coma, and now 100 hours of a TV series that’s going to be released of Star Wars!!! I’m going to have to go on sick leave for 2 weeks just to make a decent Star Wars marathon…

On the other hand Lucas at the same time is saying that Big Budget films are doomed. “The market forces that exist today make it unrealistic to spend $200 million on a movie. Those movies can’t make their money back anymore. Look at what happened with ‘King Kong.’”

But what I think is the kicker is when he says, “it’s no accident that the “small movies” outclassed the spectaculars in this year’s Academy Awards. Is that good for the business? No — it’s bad for the business. But moviemaking isn’t about business. It’s about art!” Right Luke! It’s about Vlogging and the force is with us!!! I can’t wait for the first multi-million dollar vlog. That would be hilarious.

Minister Verdronk is really getting nasty

I’m sure many of you who watch the Dutch television of heard of Minister Verdonk (Verdronk) the Minister of Alien Affairs and Integration , and her incredible right wing approach to immigration in the Netherlands. I’m sorry I cannot take this woman seriously. Let’s look at the last copule of acts she has tried or has passed:
- She tried to pass a fine to anyone who public spoke any other language other than Dutch. Yeah that’s gret for the tourist inducstry. Thank goodness this was laughed out.
- She deported Taida Pasic (18 year old girl) just a few months before she could get her highschool degree, becuase there were some forms improperly filled out. Now she has to go back Kosovo where she probably won’t get as good a diploma or education.

So now Verdronk says all Iranian Gay and Lesbian refugees can go back to Iran, becvuase it’s safe for them there again. Huh? (Check this link on Human Rights Watch) Well if you consider the death penalty to be safe Verdronk, I guess so. How does this woman sleep at night. I really wish we could just drop her in the middle of some foreign country and have her try and find her way cak to the Netherlands. Then maybe she would understand what it’s like to be a foriegner.

For those of you who feel that Verdrtonk is right and too many Aliens are penetrating Holland, I say go try and take the Dutch Citizenship Test to see if you pass to be Dutch or not.

I came across Beach n billboard via trndblog. It seems like a simple idea. Get yourself a tractor and start plowing the beach with ads. But who owns the beach? And what will happen to my wonderful beach views on vacation? Some advertising goes way to far in my mind. I’m just wondering what will be next? I mean when I go to the beach now I have the skywriters in the air, the bach ads in the sand, the billboards walking to the beach. I’m just waiting for some big ass tankers to start putting ads on the side of the boats when I’m swimming in the sea. What to say about Apple’s unveiling of thier new Mac Mini and Boombox and other products today? Let’s start with the Mini:

Okay of course they were gonna be adding the new Intel processors into the new compact Mac. I didn’t need a crystal ball to tell me that one. So is that cool? Uh, I guess, kinda. I’m not sure what I feel about the Intel chips until a few people have tested it out themselves with their own software. I don’t need to be another Apple Guiene pig.

So what IS cool? Well I would have to say the Front Row o be able to view all the media shared in iTunes is cool. That includes video. Hey I’m happy about that. But no news on the ability to play video playlists in Front row yet which is what I want man. Maybe it’s in there, only an update will tell.

But where is the cool TIVO function and EPG on this thing? I want to record episodes of Seinfeld and watch them when I get home. I guess I’ll have to go with elgato for that, or just stick to my vlogs. Yeah I’ll do that.

So the BOOMBOX. WTF was Steve smoking when he thought of this one. A BIG ASS SPEAKER for my iPod which doesn’t have surround, or allow me to connect to my DVD player, playstation, whatever. Only my iPod. This thing reminds me of the days of rundmc with a big ass box walking down the street, but now there’s an iPod sticking out. Great for watching vids on it. NOT! I mean for the same price I buy an entire home surround system with DVD player or a bunch of the Logitech portable speakers, that I can easily carry arround with me.

So I don’t think I’ll be buying any of these so called “FUN” products. Except the iPod leather holder does look pretty nice I have to admit, but I’ve seen another one that doubles as a wallet and you can actually watch the videos without taking it out of the case. Three strikes Apple.

It’s amazing what you can discover on flickr I find. Here is a photo an old friend from highschool posted. We were in photography class together. That’s me being sandwhiched in the middle. Yeah poor kid always geting picked on in Highschool. I guess that’s why I found art as my outlet. It never picks on you, you pick on it. But it’s still cool to find old frineds through old photos I feel. Flickr rocks!

The New Apple iPod will be cool

There are rumors flying all over about what the new iPod will look like. Here are the rumors in a row:

It will be a full tuch screen display (see below)
It will also be a mobile phone( Apple hays patenetd MobileMe, and people are speculating Apple will be reselling mobile services. Obviously from Cingular as they are the biggest and Apple already has a relationship with them with the Rockr.
Apple is pissed with Motorola so they won’t be building the phone if that happens.
Hopefully there will be some wireless connection with these suckers, like we’ve been waiting for 2 years since they hired wireless developers in the iPod team 2 years ago.

Vlogging "Apple’s Video Podcasting" with iLife

Yesterday Apple annouced an new application in their iLife Suite. It’s called iWeb. It makes it very easy for mac users to make blogs, podcasts, something they are calling photo casting, and even vlogs or what they call “video podcasting”. What do I think about this.

Pro’s: EXTREMELY EASY to make your vlogs, podcasts and blogs using Apple’s new software. This is great for those of you who are trying to get into it, but haven’t figured it all out with RSS enclosers and the like.

Con’s:
1. It isn’t remote. That means you have to have the program running on one computer all the time. If you re moving around and you want to update your podcast or blog from diffrent machines, ie.e school or office or home. Sorry not gonna work.
2. You HAVE to have a .Mac account to use this software. I can’t publish this stuff to my own webserrver. Now if you are doing vlogs and podcasts, thet first 100mb with .Mac is gonna go fast.
3. Apple users only can use this. Sorry windows users.

Summary, if you wanna get started with vlogging and podcasting, this is a great solution, but if you want to continue, I don’t see this as a viable option for you.

Katja Drop Commercial

“Katja Drop” is a big candy brand in Holland. Dont know if you guys ever heard of it…I think its also called “Katjes” in Germany. Anyway, last Sunday I got to direct their commercial. They say this commercial is going to be running for the next 2 years so this is pretty big.
It also includes 12 seconds of 3D animation. yah dude! and we have In-Ah supervising it.

The shoot went very well…was pretty hectic cause we had 28 kids (extra´s) running around the set. These kids are cheering and dancing in the commercial so I had to keep them all energetic and charged the whole day. But as everyone knows a shooting day can be very long…especially for an extra that is just waiting around most of the time. At the end of the day (around 4 pm) I was wiped…and the kids, being in the midst of puberty, were bored and grumpy. It was actually pretty funny when you see the raw footage before I call action the kids are standing there like sacks of potatoes! When I call action they jump up and start dancing…funny.
The commercial will be finished the end of February. I will definitely post it!

Every summer, Fran Morgan welcomed visitors to the North Georgia mountains as if the peaks were her home. She loved them so dearly, she probably felt they were.

“For 10 years after my dad retired, they volunteered to stay all summer at Waters Creek and DeSoto Falls as camp hosts, greeting campers and answering questions and making friends,” said her daughter Lynn McIntyre of Roswell.

“Camping like that, where people trust each other and there are no security systems, people behave in a more neighborly fashion. There’s this great democratic thing that happens where people talk and get to know each other at a campsite if you have the right spirit, and my mother definitely did.

“We spent many nights around the camp fire listening to great doses of common-sense wisdom being dispensed with s’mores perched on our laps.”

Sarah Frances Morgan, 77, of Tucker died of complications from a brain tumor on Sunday at DeKalb General Hospital. The body was cremated. The memorial service is 3 p.m. Sunday at Harmony Grove United Methodist Church. Wages & Sons Funeral Home, Gwinnett Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morgan grew up in Pompano Beach, Fla., when it was still largely rural and she could ride her horse on the beach and indulge her love of the outdoors.

After she graduated in 1950 from Wesleyan College in Macon, she moved with her husband, Guy P. “Mickey” Morgan, to the Miami suburb of Hialeah.

Whenever they could, the couple piled their four children in a Chevy station wagon and drove to the North Georgia mountains to camp — first with a tent, then with a pop-up camper, then with a small trailer as their home base. Sometimes Mrs. Morgan would fry up the rainbow trout her husband caught for supper. Other times, she’d set up her easel and paint watercolors of grazing horses and cool, rushing streams and vivid flowers.

After her husband’s death, she moved to Tucker in 1999 and formed a tight network of church friends. She devoured books like candy, especially favorite authors like Jan Karon, and never slowed down with her artwork, her daughter said.

“She always had a sketch pad with her,” she said. “I gave her a miniature set of watercolors, and she’d pull that out at a moment’s notice and sit down and start painting. She was completely devoted to it, anytime and anywhere.”

A favorite coffee shop in Tucker, the Alcove, was one of the places she would settle in and whip out her paints.

“I think they would all see my mom more often than I would,” her daughter said.

“She definitely loved to eat — that was one of her favorite things,” said her son, Dean Morgan of Atlanta. “She’d go from a meal to a cup of coffee to another meal, and she visited most of the fine dining establishments of Tucker, like Matthews cafeteria and the Alcove. That’s how she spent most of her time: church outings, church meetings and church eatings.”

Survivors include another daughter, Bonnie Chislett of Atlanta; another son, Scott Morgan of Fair Play, S.C.; a sister, Ann Allison of Pompano Beach; a brother, Joe Allison of Pompano Beach; and 11 grandchildren.

I just flew into Atlanta to attend the Funeral of my Grandmother. Shed died sunday evening after having surgery in removing a number of tumors in her head. She went into a coma and had subsequent strokes. In the end it didn’t appear that she had any brain activity in the places she needed them. My family decided to take her off life support and allow for a natural death.

So far at the les blogs conference:

The morning started off with me walking around Paris trying to find an open wifi point to be able to get the address for Les Blogs. Luckily I ran into someone who had the address, and I had a map. Together we were basically standing right across from the convention hall. Sweet.

Scobble started talking about his blog this morning, and how he podcasts and “video blogs” at microsoft. Question I’m gonna ask Scobble when I get a chance, what is microsoft gonna call vlogging? I’m sure it’s not gonna be video podcasting. Come on that’s the question on our minds right?

Now L’ Oreal, IBM and Skype are talking about internal blogging. Coloboration on projects via blogs, and so forth. I really could care less about that. Lots of guys in suits talking about corporate buzz terms and linking it into blogging. Where are the cool guys? Well they do have one female on the panel of 6 here. Adriana, what a babe. Sexy geek speak! Maak me gek!

So I arrived in Paris together with Tamara. Monday les blogs begins. I’ll be speaking on tuesday, and I haven’tr a clue what I’m gonna say. Just let it come to me I guess.

No interent access at the hotel but it is cheap and has a bathtub, so I’m using a french internet cafe to post this. Hopefully tommorrow I’ll be able to upload some photos and a bit of video. But stay tuned for some interviews on xolo.tv from les blogs. Damn, I just remembered I forgot to bring a good microphone. Shit. Oh well, maybe some podcaster will loan me one.:-)

For those who want to start encoding thier videos for the iPod format, have a look at this article posted by iLonge. It is only for mac at the moment. If you want to encode video for the iPod on the PC the only software I’ve found is the following: PQDVD But I’m sure more are to come. Remeber though that even though it may play on an iPod doesn’t mean it will play on regular PC’s. There are still some quirks about it.

Tonight my friend and I were forcefully searched by the Dutch police walking out of a restaurant. The police had no reason or right to search as we were exhibiting no suspicious or illegal behavior.

This post would have probably been understood better had the title read, “Is Amsterdam becoming a policed state?”

It is not a major event folks, but it is a warning sign. It’s not about being searched on the streets or about being Dutch or American, it’s about civil rights and how much of your freedom you are willing to give away for the feeling of security? I would have gladly been searched if there was some terrorist, or illegal action taking place in the area. But there was not. I was simply walking in an open space, and EVERYONE was being frisked. There was no discrimination by the police on that point. I agree that in other countries this is MUCH worse. I always felt safe in the Netherlands, and always respected the way the Police carried themselves. Up until now. That’s what this is about, nothing more, nothing less.

As far as the palbeach video that people are reffering to: It is very shocking to see what happend. The woman was speeding and was asked repeatedly to step out of her vehicle. She was breaking the law, and then resisting the officer’s to step out of her car. I don’t think walking out of a restuarant constitues breaking the law.

I know the footage that I filmed is not enough to give the whole picture. I wish I could have had it running the whole time, but I can’t film my life 24-7, and furthermore it’s not about America. Pavle says it best: “Does this put it in the same league as blacklisted torture camps? Of course not. Then again, the film is an off-the-cuff personal item and should not be seen as an intentional statement on the state of the world.”

Go get yourself a copy of the NRC Dutch newspaper if you can. I did an interview with them this morning and it’s already in the paper this afternoon! Vlogging is becoming respectable I guess. For those that don’t know Dutch media, the NRC is kinda like the Financial Times of Holland. We are right above the weather which is cool, which is predicting easy going mist and sun. The forum.xolo.tv is over for now, and I am exhausted. I want to thank all the speakers that came and gave great presentations. The stream is no longer streaming but we will be posting ALL the presentations online for everyone to download, mashup, and repost at their own discretion. By next week this time we will have vlogs of all the speakers and the panel discussions. And as we have in the title, this is only the beginning as we are already talking about the next forum in 2006. Stay tuned as this development continues with the collaborations that have founded their seed at the forum.xolo.tv!

Live 8 brought the world together. Protestors at G8 had their voice heard. Palestinians were made homeless in Jerusalem. More attacks in India shook families. The world’s top discuss our future at G8. Then today there was a terrorist attack in London. These are trying times we are living in. Just keep faith that after the storm, the sea is calm again. Our hearts go out to all the victim’s and their families.

Belly Dancing at Mark & Mel’s wedding

Last Friday I went to yet ANOTHER wedding! It seems like a plague among my friends to get married and have kids. But it was a fun party on the beach here in Holland. At one point all the girls (the one’s that went on the bachelorette party) got up and started belly dancing. They had learned it during the party. It was bound to happen. A post about children. Not ours, but we are adopting these kids for our blog kids.

First we have iKid (Huub’s son) who was so happy with his Apple t-shirt I got him during my trip to Cupertino. He walked around all day pointing to his shirt saying, “Computer”. His dad kept trying to correct him saying, “Apple!”.

Good friends of mine from highschool, who are now married, also have 2 kids. Just on their names alone we are making them our blog kids. Angelina Holland, and Ryan Gabriel. I had nothing to do with the conception i swear! But they are cute aren’t they?

My good friend Betsy Green is rounding up her 6 month trip in China. She has been photoblogging the entire event. She is a Camera Obscure photographer, and was asked to come teach at an art school in China the last semesters. Go check out her blog and see some great photos deep in the forests, cities and more. I did it! I passed along with everyone else in my group. Great work guys! And to celebrate I met up with GabeB & In-Ah who were also in London. It was In-Ah’s last night there before moving to Amsterdam into with GabeB. So she had a number of drinks with the folks from framestore where she had her last day on the job. No more Harry Potter Animation for In-Ah for a while. She’s now going to be working on KillZone 2 (Playstation Game) here in Amsterdam. GabeB and In-Ah are on the road now touring through California. Yeah us Gabe’s can’t get enough of the place. Let’s hope they post some cool stuff from the road. In any case have a look at the video. Fun.

Gabriel’s Song

Hey Guys!

As some of you may know my passion next to filmmaking is music.
It all started in 1993 when I was still in High School. My friends and I were singing in the locker rooms after gym and because of the cool acoustics (nice echo) it sounded pretty cool. Someone took notice of this and entered us as an accapella group in the school theatre gala. At first this freaked us out and we didn’t want to do it, but then we just took on the challenge and said “what the heck!”.
Well after a lot of practicing during lunch breaks in the locker rooms and having performed successfully several times, we formed the group “Different Shades”.

We entered some contests, started writing our own music, took singing lessons, performed at many weddings, got a record deal (that got cancelled) and after 8 years we just stopped. A pretty sad story,ey?

Well anyway, i continued writing my own music (just as a hobby) and have about 15 songs now.

Edit HD with the new Playstation

Sony announced the much anticipated Playstation 3 at E3 this week. Besides the 2 HDTV outputs, Blue-Ray DVD recorder, up to 7 bluetooth and PSP controllers support, Sony also said they:

Will offer a high definition camera as a peripheral to the PS3, allowing players to use the game machine as a makeshift video phone or let them broadcast their own programming, whether live or from the machine’s detachable 2.5-inch hard drive.

That is SO COOL! Folks, just get yourself a Sony Playstation 3, and HD Camera, and a BIG internet connection, and you are broadcasting LIVE to the world! Oh man. Everyone will have their own TV station soon. Maybe we will all get so sick of each other, that we will actually go outside and try to improve the environment. Nah!

Make a video playlist in iTunes

For those of you who want to see all the videos you have automatically in iTunes, I suggest making a “Smartplaylist” in iTunes that will automatically update and show you all the videos you have loaded into iTunes. Here’s how:

Goto File-> New Smart Playlist

Set the preferences to the Smart Playlist as follows:

Kind contains “QuickTime movie” (please note you must write it just like I put it between quotes).

Then Give the playlist a name like (My videos) and you’re done. You can even add a parameter to the smart playlist (playcount is 0) to see all the videos you haven’t watched yet. This is great to see all the latest vlogs in one go!

How to VJ with iTunes 4.8

As I’ve said in an earlier post, iTunes now supports video. Oh yes I must say it one more time. COOL! But the question I had was how do I make a playlist to automatically watch all my videos fullscreen? Here is how.

First make sure you have downloaded and installed iTunes 4.8.
Then drag and drop some quicktime videos into iTunes. (Note that at the moment iTunes doesn’t support mpeg muxed videos, like mpeg-1 on VCD’s).
You will see next to these videos a camera icon showing that it is a video.

Goto your iTunes->Preferences->Advanced and select videos to play fullscreen.

Now make sure your artwork thumbnail pane (at the bottom left corner) is opened up.

Then make sure that the pane is showing the artwork “Now Playing” instead of “Selected Song” by clicking on the title bar at the top of the pane to switch this.

Now you can make a Smart Playlist to see all your videos, or a regular playlist with videos of your choice. For those of you who have read my previous posting, you can get a program to download those music videos from the iTunes Music store, and then play them in iTunes. VJ away!

My Powerbook after drinking beer

Last Friday I was VJing for the Jamparty. Great Party btw. Everyone had a great time. In any case, all night people kept putting their drinks next to my laptop. I constantly asked people not to, but of course it doesn’t help. The whole night went great up until the last song when the barman was cleaning the empty glasses, and you guessed it spilled a beer all over my powerbook!

AGHHHHHHHHHHH! Quickly I rememberd a post on a forum somewhere of what to do when someone spills liquid on your laptop.

Quickly turn the laptop over and pull out the battery. Don’t worry about shutting down. You have seconds o remove all power to the laptop. Don’t waste time saving documents!
Then begin to dry the laptop completely. Get as much water (or in my case beer) as you can.
Then let it sit in a dry place, open for 2 days. This is to make sure all the moisture is dried out, and that when you turn it back on, the electrics won’t fry. Make sure to keep the battery out during this time.

So this afternoon I powered up my laptop and prayed! The keyboard is a little sticky, and it smells a bit like the laptop has a hangover (old beer smell). But it’s powered up and working. The only real damage besides a feeeeeew keys sticking is the display. It looks like the crystals don’t like beer, and some areas of the display are brighter than others. Displays are expensive things to replace on laptops, but at least it less than the laptop, (but not by much). If I had lost my laptop, I had a backup from last week, so not to much damage would be caused there. Remember to BACKUP your work!

So my laptop is now a drunk on beer. Man. I hope you never have this, but if you do, you know what to do.

iTunes update plays Video!

For those of you who love watching video blogs, trailers, and music videos on your computer, (like most gabe.nl fans do), go download the latest version of iTunes. The new iTunes 4.8 allows people to watch videos right in iTunes. These can either be placed in by:

downloading music from the music store with videos (check out the new Gorillaz single with 4 bonus videos for just $0.99)
dragging and dropping your own files into iTunes

For more info read this article. This is so cool. Just imagine what Apple has up it’s sleeve now. Everyone is speculating movie downloads from the music store. Heck yeah! I’ll download a movie for $2 and watch it on a cinema display!
Whether or not Apple will be coming out with the rumored iPod Video, all I have to say is this:

iTunes now supports video
MPEG support is already in iPod photo source code but is deactivated at the moment (much like the mic and video icons were disabled form the first iChat before iChat AV)
Steve Jobs has said, “It doesn’t make sense to make a video iPod.” Right Steve. Just like when you said that Apple wouldn’t make a stand alone screen iMac 3 years ago.

Star Wars to become new TV series

To help us fans in the wake after Star Wars, Episode III “Revenge of the Sith”, George Lucas is coming out with an 3-D animated TV series of “Clone Wars”. It will then be followed by a Live-action series featuring six Star Wars film characters. I really hope that Harrison Ford gets in on this. Gabe & I agree that’s the key ingredient in the first 3 films that is missing up till now. Sorry, but Jar-Jar doesn’t fill Han Solo’s boots. Read more: BBC news article

Big News from Adobe

Adobe has been really busy this past month. The big news is that Adobe has bought Macromedia. For those of you who don’t know, that means the company that makes Photoshop (and lots of other imaging apps) has bought the company that makes Flash. It will be very interesting to see what they will do with the products in the coming year. I’m a big fan of both Macromedia’s software and Adobe’s software, but these kind of changes are always a little scary to hear. The applications I know and love, and use every day for business, may not be around after a shake up like this. To read more check out Adobe’s press release.

More big news from Adobe is the release of a new version of it’s Creative Suite of Applications. This includes upgrades to Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, GoLive and Acrobat. There are some really cool features that have been added to this upgrade, especially to the Photoshop. And to see some of these new features in action with video, goto the NAPP’s website.

Why does being clumsy have to be painful?

They don’t really have a cure for clumsiness. Just plenty of things to make you clumsy. I blame it on Earth Day. The earth was harmonizing WAY to much and threw me off balance. Well maybe I should back up. Last friday I went for a bachelor party for Tamara’s cousin Jan Paul.

The guys had the bright idea of going to play paint-ball. Sure no problem. We were having fun at the paintball hall shooting each-other with paint, it does hurt yes. It was kind of artistic in a way seeing how the paint would explode on the clothes in a Pollock sort of way. In any case, everything was fine until I slipped. It was rather slippery at the hall, everyone slipped at least once. I just happened to land on my ankle and then I heard a Snap Crackle Pop! Ouch!

I was down. Mark (one of our friends) came over to help me and Jan Paul shot him in the next as he was seeing if I was alright. Bastard.

Anyways, off to the hospital to get checked. The guys said it was just a sprain, but I thought it was a little more serious. I’ve sprained before, and this hurt way more. Maybe I was just getting old, but I wanted to make sure. That and the fact that it looked like my foot had swallowed a tennis ball. They really aren’t kidding when they say waiting rooms are they? Luckily it wasn’t to busy. After a while the doctor comes and feels my foot (ok dirty minds switch to off please), and tells me to go have an x-ray. Huh? Oh no. X-ray means more waiting and possible longer wait for healing.

Why is it that whenever you have an x-ray done of a potential fracture or break they seem to want to put your limb in a position that normally would be uncomfortable, but with an injury is excruciating? And then I had the fortune of getting some intern who wanted to tell me all about all the various things that could have gone wrong in my foot while I have to hold my foot in this position as the pain is flowing through my body. Could I get the lesson afterwards?

X-ray done and the intern wants to show more of his knowledge to me by saying he thinks it’s broken, but not to trust him because he is still studying. Great. Time for another wait.

Thankfully by this time Tamara came to relieve the guys from Gabe watch duty so they could continue with their evening. And I could be in pain shamelessly. So we waited for the doctor again.

Another doctor comes now and begins to ask me when the last time I ate or drank was. Well I did have half a beer after the accident, but I puked everything right back out moments later, along with some chicken nuggets and eggrolls we had for lunch. Graphic enough for ya? Wait, what does what I had to eat have to do with my foot? Then the doctor proceeds to tell me I need surgery, and he needs to know for the anesthesiologist when I last ate. Surgery?! What do mean surgery. Yeah, just a few screws in your foot and you’ll have to stay overnight. Me not Happy. Tamara not happy either at the prospect of another 1.5 hour roundtrip home to get my stuff to spend the night at the hospital.

After a while the doctor comes back and apologizes for being a little overzealous. It turns out he mailed his supervisor for a second opinion, and he said a cast would do fine. Thank god for e-mail! So no surgery, just a cast. Thank goodness. Gabe more relaxed at that prospect.

So I got a cast as seen here. And Tamara took me home,

Where I know have to sit on the couch for a week until I get a new cast. But this time I get to choose a pretty color! Thanks to everyone who has called and e-mailed me to get better. The funniest is this MMS I got from Murque.
Thanks. So if I didn’t show up to an appointment, it’s because I am here, on the couch, with my laptop. Thank god for Skype & Wifi!

He’s apparently broken a lot of bones in his body, but luckily there seems to be no brain damage or damage to his nervous system. Last weekend I attended my highschool reunion. I know what you’re saying, “big deal!”. Well to me it is actually. I went to an International School having moved around to different countries a lot as a kid. I never thought I would ever have an official reunion because all the people in my class are spread out all over the world now. But IT HAPPENED! It was amazing to see people that had traveled from Hawaii, London, Spain, Japan, even Iraq! I will be posting a few vlogs on this so to all the ISA Alumni, STAY TUNED! Trent Reznor’s Garageband Experiment

Those of you who are rockers from the early 90′s will appreciate this. Nine Inch Nails’ front man Trent Reznor has done something really cool. Forget the U2 iPod, Trent has uploaded an entire Garageband project of his latest single.

If you have the program Garageband from Apple you can download the 70mb file and mix and play with the entire song! This gets me thinking about the whole idea of exchanging music mixes and mash-ups. It’s so cool what Trent has done this, and I’m looking forward to what other artists will do. I can’t wait until filmmakers start posting their Final Cut Pro projects to be re-edited. Video is the next step.

Yep! yesterday we started shooting for Schiphol Airport DVD3 where we follow the building progress of the expansion of Schiphol Airport over the course of 4 years. Each year we produce a DVD with the latest updates and information on their building procedures. At the moment we’re finishing DVD2 (shall probably be finished next month), but of course the building goes on so we had to already start filming for the third DVD!

So…this meant…getting up very very early and run around Schiphol through the mud with heavy equipment the whole day!
As you can see on this picture (which was taken in the morning) I am still brain dead… “only coffee could safe me now!”.

After 8 weeks of hard work, my students have produced the first version of HKU TV. I am so proud!

I have been teaching my students at the Utrecht College of Arts (HKU), how to vlog. There are some very impressive videos that have been posted. March 30,2005 the 14th Annual PANL awards ceremony took place at the Panama Club in Amsterdam.

Gabe created all the visuals for the award ceremony. You can watch the intro film that was made by clicking on the thumbnail to the right. There were very positive reactions about the entire award show, and about the films made by Whisper Media. The music was supplied by Collide. The track is called “Razor”. Awesome music, check them out at www.collide.net

After the awards ceremony, Gabe & Gabe VJ’d along to the DJ sounds of Howard Komproe of the “Sjors & Sjimmie Sound System”. A big hit was the demonstration of interactive photo VJing whereby the audience could pose for photographs, or MMS their own photographs, and have those photos be sampled into the VJ visuals moments later.

Gabe Bauer had his birthday yesterday, and threw a great party together with Hans! We all pitched in for Gabe to get an acoustic guitar that he can connect to his computer, and Hans got a collection for a new light for in his living room. At the moment all he has is a simple fitting hanging from the ceiling. So Happy Birthday to gabe & Hans. Oh man, there was a lot of alcohol. I’m still queasy. GREAT PARTY GUYS!

This is a picture of how I spent my New Year’s this year. On Daytona beach with my family and my girl. From left you see Arielle (sister), Tamara, and Mckell (brother). My dad had the great idea to rent these beach combers. Both he and I flipped one of these beach style trikes over when we were trying to do spin outs. I guess we were to heavy.

Tamara and I wanted to go surfing, and even though the weather was nice and warm, the water was WAY TO COLD! Oh wll. I guess we’ll have to wait till this summer for that.

5 years ago we made a short kung fu movie about a hero fleeing from Hong Kong to Holland to escape the clutches of the chinese mafia. The film was succesful in various film festivals and especially on ifilm.com.
Now we’re in the process of making a DVD with alot of extra’s! The footage will be re-captured 10 bit uncompressed, color corrected and skaled to wide screen.
It’s going to be a hell of a difference from the old version. Up till now people have only seen it on VHS quality…

Yep! another corporate film! Last wednesday we went to Zeeland (=a province of the Netherlands) and shot a film about frozen orange juices. The evening before the shoot we stayed in a hotel nearby, cause we had to start really early the next day….had to get up at 6.00!

Jason’s Skate Board Film!

A few months ago my brother and I made a skate board movie. I think it was about 14 years ago when my friend (Raoul) and I decided to make a skate film with my new JVC video camcorder on a Saturday afternoon…man, am I that old? Anyway, back then we thought we were good, we thought we ROCKED!..we were the neighborhood skate kings man!….

So then comes Jason (my brother), 14 years later, and says: “yo Gabe, check out what I can do!”. And I watch him do things with a skateboard that I only used to dream of! Absolutely nothing compared to what I could do…man this guy is good!

So from that came a new skate film. We had great fun making this. A few weeks after we filmed Jason came up to Amsterdam and we did the editing. We really freaked out with Final Cut Pro piling up the video layers in different composite modes and manipulating the colors.

I’ve been playing around with the idea to start a “Vlogging for grandma” tutorial series. Basically a series of videos to show how easy it is to setup a VLOG. Made just for my Grandma, so that means easy and mostly free. You know explaining site syndication and all. And if you don’t leave a comment and let me know if you would find it interesting. In any case I have been surfing around and have found 2 great videos thus far that show this stuff.

How to make your own template in LiveType

With apple introducing Final Cut Express HD, bundling LiveType and Soundtrack along with it, Gabe and I thought we’d make our first VLOG tip. This tip shows you how to make your own template in LiveType. This is great if you have a tv show, or VLOG that you want to quickly remake the same titles for different episodes, keeping the same animation, yet not having to build it from scratch each time.

Recycling video christmas cards

Working on Schiphol

Today it’s monday. For some reason I always have to jump-start myself to get working on a monday…even my typing is going sssslow (check out this article)

This week I’ll be editing a corporate film for Schiphol Airport. It’s a film that follows the expansion of the airport over a period of a year. It also explains to a large target group where, how and why it needs to expand.

We came up with the idea of a kid (Tom) pointing out and explaining the different building projects to his best friend Skip (a muppet).

Tom has built his own miniature Schiphol with his LEGO blocks. Using the different colored blocks he explains the complex masterplan of one of Europe’s largest airports.

Gabe and I directed this one. The first DVD we finished last year and now it’s already time for the second one….man, time flies!

TMF bumpers being filmed

Today I was lucky enough to be able to ride along with STETZ to their new production for TMF. They got the job to make the new bumpers for this Dutch Music TV Station. TMF (The Music Factory) has been owned by MTV for some time now.

This year TMF /MTV are bringing out a number of TMF channels on the cable decoder. A lot like MTV Base, etc. From what I saw they will be having a Hip-hop channel, Disco /Dance channel, and of course Dutch Glory channel. The Dutch glory channel will be featuring alot of the Dutch folk singer’s music such as Frans Bauer. Who’s that? You don’t want to know. Just imagine it as Dutch Country Western music.

In any case STETZ was producing the project, and it looked cool!

They had a limbo set with a huge LCD screen projecting different scenes around Holland. For instance the beach, the Dam (Amsterdam), a snack bar, etc. In between the LCD screen projection and the camera a number of actors are walking and interacting. The pimped up car hopping up and down will be the classic one I think.

Some interesting technical bits: The whole shoot is being done using Sony’s HDCAM, and will be edited on FCP.

The video loops were being sent from a G5 using FCP as well. Pete Harm (on of the STETZ producers) was finally able to get behind the controls. All I can say is what I saw of the video quality was incredible. I can’t wait till everyone goes HD. Trust me people, it will be better for your eyes! In any case these new channels and bumpers will be broadcasting in Holland soon. Keep your eyes out.

Me and My girl at Daytona

We went there for christmas/new year’s vacation with my family. The picture was taken by my sister Arielle. She was using our new Nikon Coolpix 3200 Digital Camera (3MP,…. Great camera for a great price. What a nice photo. Don’t you think?
